How ice dams form

Heat from the house warms the upper roof and melts the snow. The water runs down to the cold overhang at the eaves and refreezes. Over time a ridge of ice builds up, and new meltwater pools behind it.

Why they leak

Shingles are made to shed water running downhill, not to hold back a pond. Water behind an ice dam can work under shingles and into walls and ceilings.

Safe removal

Don't chop at ice with tools, which damages shingles and gutters. Professional crews use safer methods. Never work on a snowy roof without fall protection.

Long-term fixes

  • Air-seal and insulate the attic floor to keep heat in the house
  • Improve attic ventilation so the roof deck stays cold
  • Ice and water protection at the eaves and valleys on the next roof
  • Fix heat sources like recessed lights or ducts in the attic
