What snow load is
Snow load is the weight of snow a roof is designed to carry. Building departments around the lake set design snow loads by location and elevation, and they're among the higher requirements in the country.
Not all snow weighs the same
Fresh powder is light. Wet, packed snow and ice weigh much more. Rain on top of existing snow adds a lot of weight fast.
Warning signs
- Doors that suddenly stick inside the house
- New cracks in ceilings or walls
- Sagging ceilings or roof lines
- Creaking or popping sounds
- Leaks during snow
What to do
If you see signs of stress, get people out of the affected area and call a qualified professional. Roof snow removal should be done by a crew with fall protection.
Check your local building department for the design snow load where you live.
